Israel is furious at the Vatican because of the final conclusions of the Synod of Bishops on the Middle East this weekend. According to Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Danny Ayalon, the Synod "was held hostage" by enemies of the Jewish state. He demands that the Vatican distances itself from the final conclusions, because those statements cast a shadow over the good relations between the Holy See, Israel and the Jews." In the final document the Synod challenged Israel to leave all the occupied Palestinian territories, as the country also is charged to do by UN resolutions. The 185 bishops and patriarchs of the Eastern Catholic churches suggest that "it was wrong to rely on biblical and theological positions to legitimize injustices." Israel particularly resented the statement of the Greek Melchitic bishop Cyrille Salim Bustros. He said during the presentation of the final document: "One should not rely on the theme of the Promised Land to give legitimacy to the return of the Jews to Israel and the exile of the Palestinians." According to him the Promised Land relates to "The Land of God" and therefore "the whole earth." "There are no more chosen peoples," said Bustros. The Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, in an attempt to dampen the emotions said that one should not focus on what individual bishops have said, but on what is in the final document. Volgens Israël’s onderminister van Buitenlandse Zaken Danny Ayalon is de synode „gegijzeld” door vijanden van de joodse staat. Hij eist dat het Vaticaan afstand neemt van de slotconclusies, omdat die uitspraken een schaduw werpen over de „goede verhoudingen tussen de Heilige Stoel, Israël en de Joden”. In het gewraakte slotdocument roept de synode Israël op alle bezette Palestijnse gebieden te verlaten, zoals dat het land ook is opgedragen in VN-resoluties. De 185 bisschoppen en patriarchen van de oosterse katholieke kerken wijzen er op dat „het niet geoorloofd is om terug te vallen op theologische en bijbelse posities om onrechtvaardigheden te legitimeren”. Israël is met name gepikeerd over de uitspraak van de Grieks- Melchitische bisschop Cyrille Salim Bustros. Hij stelde tijdens de presentatie van het slotdocument: „Men mag zich niet baseren op het thema van het Beloofde Land om de terugkeer van de Joden in Israël en de ballingschap van Palestijnen te legitimeren”. Het Beloofde Land betreft volgens hem „Het land van God” en dus „heel de aarde”. „Er zijn geen uitverkoren volkeren meer’’, aldus Bustros. De woordvoerder van het Vaticaan, pater Federico Lombardi, heeft in een poging de gemoederen te temperen gesteld dat men zich niet moet richten op wat individuele bisschoppen hebben gezegd, maar op wat in het slotdocument staat. Paus Benedictus heeft de term „uitverkoren volk” diverse keren gebruikt met betrekking tot het Joodse volk. |
