This became clear from the World Risk Index of the United Nations University, which was presented Friday (today) in Brussels. In the index ranked countries on almost all the risks they run of floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters. Vanuatu Island in the Pacific Ocean is ranked first, followed by Tonga and the Philippines. The Gulf state of Qatar is the least likely to be affected by a natural disaster. Netherlands is listed at number 69. Dat blijkt uit de vrijdag in Brussel gepresenteerde World Risk Index van de United Nations University. In de index staan bijna alle landen gerangschikt naar het risico dat zij lopen op overstromingen, aardbevingen en ander natuurgeweld. De eilandstaat Vanuatu in de Stille Oceaan voert de lijst aan, gevolgd door Tonga en de Filipijnen. De Golfstaat Qatar heeft de minste kans te worden getroffen door een natuurramp. Nederland staat in de lijst op plaats 69. Gezien de lage ligging hoort Nederland weliswaar bij de vijftien gevaarlijkste landen ter wereld, maar doordat Nederland goed in staat is zich tegen overstromingen te wapenen, valt de uiteindelijke positie een stuk lager uit, zeggen de onderzoekers. Hetzelfde geldt voor bijvoorbeeld Japan. Albanië is het enige Europese land waar het risico groter is dan in Nederland. Op zichzelf is Albanië minder gevaarlijk, maar het land is minder goed voorbereid. |
